Ragdolls are one of the most beloved cat breeds in Australia—and for good reason. Known for their striking blue eyes, luxurious semi-long coats, and docile, affectionate nature, Ragdolls make ideal family companions. They’re often described as “puppy-like” due to their friendly and laid-back personalities.
Origins of the Breed
The Ragdoll breed was first developed in the 1960s by Ann Baker in California, USA. A white domestic long-haired cat with a sweet temperament became the foundation of the breed, and through selective breeding, the Ragdoll as we know it today was born—beautiful, calm, and incredibly affectionate.
The breed made its way to Australia in the 1990s and has since grown rapidly in popularity, thanks to its stunning appearance and family-friendly temperament.
Personality and Temperament
Ragdolls are famous for their relaxed and gentle disposition. They thrive on human companionship and often follow their owners from room to room. Unlike many other cat breeds, Ragdolls generally prefer to be on the ground or furniture rather than high shelves, making them easier to manage in a typical home environment.
They are not overly vocal, but will communicate in soft, sweet meows when they want your attention. These cats are well-suited to families with children, the elderly, or even other pets—especially dogs—due to their non-aggressive and tolerant nature.
Appearance
Ragdolls are large, muscular cats with soft, silky coats that require minimal grooming despite their length. Males can weigh between 6.5 to 9 kg, while females are usually a bit smaller, around 4.5 to 7 kg.
Their coats come in a variety of colours and patterns including: Seal, Blue, Chocolate, Lilac, Red, and Cream
Patterns: Colourpoint, Mitted, Bicolour, and Lynx (Tabby markings)
Regardless of colour, all Ragdolls have captivating blue eyes and a plush, rabbit-like coat that gives them a truly regal appearance.
Care and Maintenance
While Ragdolls are relatively low-maintenance for a long-haired breed, regular brushing (2–3 times per week) will help prevent tangles and reduce shedding. They typically have a low-maintenance undercoat, which means they are less prone to matting compared to other long-haired breeds.
As a registered breeder, we ensure all of our kittens are raised in a loving home environment, accustomed to being handled and socialised from an early age. We also DNA test our breeding cats to rule out known hereditary conditions such as HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy) and PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease).
Health and Longevity
Ragdolls are generally a healthy breed, with a lifespan of 12–16 years when well cared for. Regular vet check-ups, a quality diet, and plenty of love and attention will help ensure your Ragdoll enjoys a long, happy life.
